The Futurelect Southern Africa Public Leadership Programme: Transformative Seminar Weekends for Senior Political Leaders

Updated: Oct 25, 2024

The Futurelect Southern Africa Public Leadership Programme is a seven-month journey that equips aspiring leaders with the tools and knowledge to succeed in senior political and public office. A key element of this programme is the seven in-residence seminar weekends, which offer fellows an immersive and hands-on experience and help them develop skills essential to navigating the complexities of public leadership.

Each seminar focuses on distinct, crucial aspects of leadership:

Seminar 1: “Public Narrative: Why Me? Why Us? Why Now?”

The journey begins with personal reflection. Fellows delve into their public purpose, learning to define and articulate their "why" in leadership. This process helps leaders stay grounded in their values and vision throughout their public service careers.

Seminar 2: “The State of Your Nation”

This session sharpens fellows' understanding of their constituencies and public service vision. It teaches them how to craft a political vision and navigate the governmental structures necessary for enacting change—key competencies for any leader aiming to make impactful decisions.

Seminar 3: “The Elements of a Public Life”

Entering public life presents unique challenges. This seminar exposes fellows to the realities of a career in the public eye, including navigating public expectations, media scrutiny, and the everyday pressures of leadership.

Seminar 4: “Ethics in Public Leadership & Corruption Case Study”

Ethical decision-making is paramount in leadership. In this seminar, fellows engage with case studies of government and political leaders who face ethical dilemmas. Understanding how to handle these challenges ensures they remain accountable and transparent in their careers.

Seminar 5: “Political Campaigns & Grassroots Organising”

Campaigning is essential for political leaders. Through an extended campaign simulation, fellows dive into the intricacies of running political campaigns and mobilising communities, a critical skill for public office.

Seminar 6: “Leadership by Design”

This session expands on the leadership concepts introduced earlier. Fellows learn how to design and lead sustainable, positive change in public institutions—a challenging but rewarding part of public leadership.

Seminar 7: “Managing the Transition & Graduation Ceremony”

As the programme concludes, fellows focus on transitioning into public service. They develop personal strategies to ensure a smooth shift from the learning environment to real-world political and public leadership roles.

These seminars provide invaluable insights for senior leaders, ensuring they are well-equipped to face the demands of high-level political and public office while staying rooted in ethical leadership, strategic vision, and community engagement. The programme's structure guarantees that fellows emerge as well-rounded leaders ready to drive meaningful change across Southern Africa
